आदिकाल से गणेश की स्तुति के अलग अलग प्रमाण मिले हैं। इनकी कथा भिन्न-भिन्न है। सतयुग में सिंहासन आरूढ़ विनायक के स्वरूप में पूजा गया जिनकी दस भुजा थी परन्तु मुख तो हाथी का ही था। त्रेतायुग में गणेश मयूरारूढ़, मयूरेश्वर के नाम से विख्यात थे जिनकी छह भुजा थी। द्वापर में इनका वाहन भूषकराज था तब इनकी चार भुजाएं थी। कलि के अंत में ये धुम्रकेत के नाम से अश्व में सवार होंगे इनका वर्ण भी धुम्र होगा।
